Sushi by Rob - Utah Food Photographer

Who wouldn't love to have a private chef come to your house and make sushi for you and your favorite people?! This is the only way to experience sushi!

The day started out with Rob and I hitting up Fog River Fish Market in Salt Lake City, Utah. And then it was back to the house to greet our guests, eat some amazing sushi, enjoy the company of our guests and learn some cool stuff, like the proper way to eat nigiri. And I got to the best seat in the house to watch it all go down! As you can tell Rob also teaches. My next sushi endeavor will be taking one of his classes.  Goals!

I have to point out this is just my dream house, owned by my generous and very stylish cousins. Thanks Ken and Allison! (as my husband likes to remind me we are working on not coveting. The struggle is real...)

And thanks to Rob for the amazing opportunity! If you want to host your own private sushi dinner or learn from Rob head over to to his website Sushi by Rob

Breakfast Utah food photography

I had a "happy accident" with my film this week. I think the lab cross processed my film and I am in love with what it did to these shots.

Don't you just wish you could stay at this bed and breakfast? Well you can't because it's my house… But if you really want to come visit you can, and I would totally make you a fancy breakfast and serve it on my favorite blue and white dishes.
I can't decide which one is my favorite. What do you think?

Portfolio

I am going to unabashedly brag, not because I think I am especially worthy of bragging or anything, but because I have been working my tush off for the last two weeks on grad school applications. And I'm a tiny bit proud of myself.

A part of the applications is an art portfolio. I decided this would be a good time to share some recent photos mingled with some of my art from recent art classes, and old photos from my photo program at the University of Utah, in the form of my portfolio.
(I mostly want to show off my recent photos but yer gettin' it all!)

I am in serious need of some TLC. I'm thinking sleep and.... I can't think of anything else... hahahah!
what does one do to relax these days? I'm taking suggestions.

So without further ado, I present my portfolio:

Pumpkin Muffins

I've been trying some new recipes from the Paleo Diet.... and well... I wish I could say these are good. But they're not! Hahahaha! these are my gross pumpkin muffins! :) I just needed something sweet. They actually aren't "gross" but they're not "good" either, even when you haven't had any sugar.

2011 International Conference on Food Styling and Photography 1.3

I was going to post these by day..... but honestly it was so stinkin' long ago I can't even remember when everything happened. Let's call this day three. I don't think I took my camera on day two.

Who would go to a food styling and photography conference planning on not eating....? Yours truly!
Because I spent all the money I had just getting to the conference, I had originally planned on not spending any money on food while in Boston. I had decided that I was going to find the closest grocery store and stock up on fruit and granola bars. It was apparent the first night how silly and foolish of an idea that was.  Instead I ate my little heart out and loved every minute of it!

The conference held a super expensive dinner the third night and, honestly, it sounded kinda snarky. So I didn't sign up for the fancy 5 course dinner where, as advertised, I would get to rub elbows with the best photographers and stylists in the industry. Instead a few of us had our own fancy dinners at Dick's Last Resort, and Legal Sea Foods. Here we are enjoying our better-than-five-course dinner at Legal Sea Foods.

I have to give a shout out to Noah Whitenoff of NuStyling, a food stylist in Montreal, and Elizabeth Tichenor of Elizabeth Tichenor Photography, based in California. I loved hanging out with these insanely talented people.

The best part of going to a food styling and photography conference is being able to take pictures of my food and every other thing in sight without the dirty looks and annoyed comments. They love and accept me the way I am... sniff sniff. tear.

eggs

Sometimes film gives you these beautiful happy accidents that  you never get with digital. And most people would think they are bad but I secretly love them.
More eggs from my brothah on film. These eggs are from last summer, but nowadays everything I post is.... more on why everything I post is from last year, later!

Spaghetti with Braised Kale

Kale?! Yes please! This has quickly become my favorite dish right now. My mom found a recipe that actually makes kale taste good! And I have been craving it so much lately....  The health benefits make it even better! fiber, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular support, vitamin K, A and C. I wonder if maybe all the  Parmesan cheese I load it with cancels out all the healthiness of the kale.... hehe

2011 International Conference on Food Styling and Photography 1.1

I'm finally posting photos from my trip to Boston. hehe

Last June I went to the International Conference on Food Styling and Photography in Boston. I absolutely love photographing food and really wanted to learn how to break into the business of food photography. I can't say I learned how to break into the business here in Utah but I did learn a lot about food photography and styling and I met a lot of amazing photographers and stylists. I am so glad I went and would love to go again. And when I talk about food photography I'm talking beyond food blogs.... I think it would be pretty rad to do it as a profession. I still don't know how to do that with my current circumstances, but I'm going to keep photographing food when I can and stay open to that possibility. :)

Okay on with the conference!

The first day I had signed up for a workshop, where we got to meet, talk to and watch the greats in food photography and food styling. There was so much going on and so many beautiful foods and dishes and styling tools. It felt like Christmas in June, but for nerds who like photographing food.... hahahha! Man! I might be willing to kill someone for some of this stuff to shoot food with. Just sayin.... ;)
