Bear Lake

I am preparing for one of many trips to Bear Lake, Utah, but this year not with my family, but my new husband's family. It's been a couple years since I've been and as I've been looking through some old film I realize so much of my film is from this place. I love it. I love staying at brother-in-law's family farm; hearing the cows, waking up to the sun, taking walks to the cemetery and down along the fields, and spending all day at the beach. I love this place and I love this film.
Here are some random photos from my all time favorite Kodak Tri-x film. I used to shoot with this film exclusively.

Rediscovered film from Alaska

I love resdiscovering old film! It's like Christmas, or like reliving the day you got said film the first time in the mail that felt like Christmas.
I know these aren't particularly noteworthy but they are from when I went to Alaska. and look how young Syd is. And I love when my holga camera gives me these unexpected results that are nothing I ever tried to achieve, but I love them anyway. (see bottom photo)

Portfolio

I am going to unabashedly brag, not because I think I am especially worthy of bragging or anything, but because I have been working my tush off for the last two weeks on grad school applications. And I'm a tiny bit proud of myself.

A part of the applications is an art portfolio. I decided this would be a good time to share some recent photos mingled with some of my art from recent art classes, and old photos from my photo program at the University of Utah, in the form of my portfolio.
(I mostly want to show off my recent photos but yer gettin' it all!)

I am in serious need of some TLC. I'm thinking sleep and.... I can't think of anything else... hahahah!
what does one do to relax these days? I'm taking suggestions.

So without further ado, I present my portfolio:

2011 International Conference on Food Styling and Photography 1.4

I can't believe it's taken me so long to post these. I actually kinda forgot about them.... :(These are the only film photos I took the whole time. And I really love film. :)
These photos are from when I ventured out of my sad dorm room and did a little site seeing.

If you want to see more photos from the conference and maybe even some actual FOOD photos see:

2011 International Conference on Food Styling and Photography 1.3

I was going to post these by day..... but honestly it was so stinkin' long ago I can't even remember when everything happened. Let's call this day three. I don't think I took my camera on day two.

Who would go to a food styling and photography conference planning on not eating....? Yours truly!
Because I spent all the money I had just getting to the conference, I had originally planned on not spending any money on food while in Boston. I had decided that I was going to find the closest grocery store and stock up on fruit and granola bars. It was apparent the first night how silly and foolish of an idea that was.  Instead I ate my little heart out and loved every minute of it!

The conference held a super expensive dinner the third night and, honestly, it sounded kinda snarky. So I didn't sign up for the fancy 5 course dinner where, as advertised, I would get to rub elbows with the best photographers and stylists in the industry. Instead a few of us had our own fancy dinners at Dick's Last Resort, and Legal Sea Foods. Here we are enjoying our better-than-five-course dinner at Legal Sea Foods.

I have to give a shout out to Noah Whitenoff of NuStyling, a food stylist in Montreal, and Elizabeth Tichenor of Elizabeth Tichenor Photography, based in California. I loved hanging out with these insanely talented people.

The best part of going to a food styling and photography conference is being able to take pictures of my food and every other thing in sight without the dirty looks and annoyed comments. They love and accept me the way I am... sniff sniff. tear.

2011 International Conference on Food Styling and Photography 1.1

I'm finally posting photos from my trip to Boston. hehe

Last June I went to the International Conference on Food Styling and Photography in Boston. I absolutely love photographing food and really wanted to learn how to break into the business of food photography. I can't say I learned how to break into the business here in Utah but I did learn a lot about food photography and styling and I met a lot of amazing photographers and stylists. I am so glad I went and would love to go again. And when I talk about food photography I'm talking beyond food blogs.... I think it would be pretty rad to do it as a profession. I still don't know how to do that with my current circumstances, but I'm going to keep photographing food when I can and stay open to that possibility. :)

Okay on with the conference!

The first day I had signed up for a workshop, where we got to meet, talk to and watch the greats in food photography and food styling. There was so much going on and so many beautiful foods and dishes and styling tools. It felt like Christmas in June, but for nerds who like photographing food.... hahahha! Man! I might be willing to kill someone for some of this stuff to shoot food with. Just sayin.... ;)

Hiking in Girdwood, Alaska

This was my most favorite part of my entire trip to Alaska (okay visiting the sister and her family was good too...) Hiking in the rain forest in Girdwood was so magical and beautiful, like being in a fairy tale. I know that sounds a little dramatic and corny but it really was the most beautiful and serene place. And the city of Girdwood was like a little village from a children's story book.

On the way down the mountain we pulled our car over to the side of the road and picked salmon berries in the rain. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
In case you were wondering... salmon berries aren't really that great, not like raspberries. But picking them is! :)

Seward, Alaska

I've been posting a lot of personal work lately. But, I'm just so excited to share photos that were taken on my trip to Alaska oh so long ago. I can't believe it took me so long to get the film developed.

Alaska - Wildlife Cruise

taken with my Holga. I finally got the film developed after 3 years. yay!

I just thought it was kind of funny how everyone was trying to get a picture for the brief second that the whale's fin came out of the water... they were probably all thinking they would capture a photo that you would see in national geographic.
